We Are All Related is an important concept in Lakota (and other Indigenous) cultures. It’s a reflection on how everything that exists is connected to each other. Not just other humans, but animals, plants, the sky, water, and land are part of our big family. The star quilt background and icons surrounding the text represent all of these elements in a kaleidoscopic design.
This series was made for display at the Madison Municipal Building and as a public art project on East Washington Avenue, also in Madison, Wisconsin. The 13 languages were selected based on my own heritage, non-English languages that are spoken in the Madison area, and Madison’s sister cities around the world. The languages are:
